Software
Below is a list of the most common pieces of software installed onto PC's today.
Operating System - The operating system is the interface between the computers functions and the user. Before the introduction of Graphical User Interfaces (or GUI's for short) PC's were very complex and time consuming to operate. Now though, with the introduction of Windows and other systems like Linux, users are able to perform many tasks with their PC that could not be done before the introduction of these GUI's.
Drivers - You may have seen the word "Driver's" pop up from time to time when trying to decide who you'd like to fix your computer. Well, a "Driver" is a piece of software that tells the hardware it relates to how to operate. Think of the Driver as an instructor. The instructor tells you how to improve "your game" and if you put his tips into practice, your game will improve! It's the same with your PC's hardware. The driver's for particular pieces of hardware are updated regularly to enhance performance, and so if your drivers are not up-to-date then your PC may be slower than it could be!
Anti-virus - Anti-virus software is very popular nowadays as the threat of malicious software finding it's way onto our PC's is greater than ever. Anti-virus software picks up on any "viruses" that are trying to find their way onto your system, and stop them from embedding themselves before they can do any damage. Some viruses can actually keep track of your keystrokes, and so in a matter of time the information they could provide may include your personal banking details! Anti-virus software comes highly recommended!
Office Packages - Office packages generally include a word processor for typing letters, a spreadsheet program and an email program. These can be had for as little as £10 or for as much as £600! A popular office package is Microsoft Office, and basic versions of this usually come with your Windows installation.
Video Games - Fairly self-explanatory, video games are games that are run on your PC, using either the keyboard and mouse or a joystick to control.
